Crunchbase MCP Skills
A Crunchbase skill gives your AI assistant instructions for a specific job, such as finding companies or preparing a meeting brief. Skills help you repeat that work without writing a detailed prompt each time.
You need both a Crunchbase connection and a skill. The connection gives your assistant access to Crunchbase data; the skill guides how it completes the task.

Sourcing and private-company research
These five skills are available in version 1.0.1. They focus on private companies.
Choose the job you want to do, then download its ZIP file. New to skills? Start with Prepare company brief. You can add more skills later.
| I want to… | Skill and example | Download |
|---|---|---|
| Prepare for a company meeting | Prepare company brief | Download ZIP |
| Find companies that match my criteria | Build thesis landscape | Download ZIP |
| Find companies that recently raised money | Review funding signals | Download ZIP |
| Compare funding across a group of companies | Analyze capital intensity | Download ZIP |
| Review or update my Crunchbase lists | Manage saved lists | Download ZIP |
Set up in your AI tool
First, connect your AI tool to Crunchbase and sign in to your Crunchbase account. Your account must include access to the Crunchbase MCP connection. See access requirements if you are unsure. If Crunchbase is already connected, skip this step.
Download a ZIP from the table above and keep it compressed. Upload it through your AI tool’s skill settings, using the steps below. The ZIP already contains the files the skill needs.
ChatGPT
- Open Skills and choose the option to create or add a skill.
- Select Upload from your computer and choose the ZIP you downloaded.
- Wait for the skill to appear in your library, then start a new chat with Crunchbase available.
Menu labels can vary by workspace. If you cannot add a skill, ask your workspace administrator to check your permissions.
Claude
- Enable Code execution and file creation. For individual accounts, this is under Settings → Capabilities. For a work account, your administrator may need to enable it.
- Open Customize → Skills, select + → Create skill → Upload a skill, and choose the ZIP you downloaded.
- Turn on the skill, then start a new chat with Crunchbase available.
This setting lets Claude run the files used by skills. See Claude’s skill setup guide if you need help.
Perplexity Computer
- Open Skills → Create skill → Upload a skill.
- Upload the ZIP directly, without extracting or repackaging it.
- Check that it appears under My Skills, then start a new task with Crunchbase available.
See Perplexity’s skill setup guide for help with uploads.
Try a skill
Use a prompt for a skill you installed. Mention Crunchbase and describe what you need in your own words.
You do not need to choose every search filter before you start. The assistant may ask a follow-up question about the companies, dates, or results you want.
Prepare for a company meeting
Use Crunchbase to prepare a short meeting brief on Anthropic (anthropic.com).
You should receive a company summary with Crunchbase links and funding information. To tailor the brief, add your meeting goal or the topics you want to discuss.
Find companies that match your criteria
Use Crunchbase to find US companies that make software for dental practices. Group them by what their software does.
The assistant may ask which funding stages or funding limits you want. You can also request a limit, such as “Show up to 20 companies.”
Find companies that recently raised money
Use Crunchbase to find US cybersecurity companies that announced seed funding in the past 30 days.
For a specific period, replace “the past 30 days” with a start and end date.
Compare funding across companies
Use Crunchbase to compare the funding raised by Together AI (together.ai), Fireworks AI (fireworks.ai), and Baseten (baseten.co) over the past 12 months.
Supply the companies you want to compare, or name a Crunchbase saved list. To discover companies first, use Build thesis landscape.
Review or update a saved list
Use Crunchbase to show the companies in my “Infrastructure Watchlist.”
Replace the example list name with your own. To change a list, say what you want to add or save:
Use Crunchbase to add Baseten (baseten.co) to my “Infrastructure Watchlist.”
For more detailed requests, see the sourcing workflow guide.
What to expect
- Company links and dates. Results should link to Crunchbase profiles and show when the research was done.
- Follow-up questions. If a company name or search request is unclear, the assistant may ask you to clarify it.
- Missing information. A dash means no value was returned. It does not mean zero or prove that an event did not happen. Missing amounts can make funding totals incomplete.
- Clear limits. Results may cover only part of a market. A comparison of your selected companies describes that group.
- Changes only when requested. Reviewing a saved list does not change it. When you ask for a change, the assistant should show what it will do and check that the result saved correctly.
If the assistant cannot remove companies from a list, it may offer to create a replacement list. It should ask for your approval before it creates that replacement.
Use the results to support your research. Funding figures show money raised; they do not show how quickly a company spends it or replace other investment checks.
Get help
| Problem | What to do |
|---|---|
| I cannot find the upload option | Ask your workspace administrator whether you can add custom skills. |
| The ZIP will not upload | Select the original ZIP from your downloads, not an extracted folder. Check your AI tool’s file-size limit. |
| The assistant cannot access Crunchbase | Check the connection and sign in again if prompted. Use the connection guide to check your setup. |
| The assistant does not use the skill | Check that the skill is installed and enabled, then start a new chat. Name the skill in your request, such as “Use Crunchbase and the Prepare company brief skill.” |
| The assistant finds the wrong company | Add the company’s website or Crunchbase profile link to your request. |
| A calculation fails | Check whether your AI tool allows code execution. If you manage your own setup, see the runtime requirements below. |
| The search returns no companies | Ask why the search returned no matches. If you want a broader search, state which criteria can change. |
When you report a problem, include the skill name, version, AI tool, and prompt you used. Remove passwords, API keys, and private company information.
Advanced setup
Claude Code and Codex
For command-line installation, you need Node.js and npm. Run the skills installer, then choose your skills and AI tool:
npx skills add crunchbase/crunchbase-mcp-skillsThe installer uses the current project by default. Add --global to use the skills across projects, or --list to see the available skills.
This command installs from the repository’s default branch, which may differ from version 1.0.1. Use the release downloads above when you need that specific version. See the installation options for single-skill and manual setup.
Runtime requirements
The current sourcing skills include calculation scripts that require Python 3.9 or later in the assistant’s execution environment. The company-brief skill has no calculation script. For a hosted AI tool, this requirement applies to the environment that runs the skill, not the computer where you download the ZIP.
For manual installation, keep each complete skill folder and its supporting files. See MCP and runtime requirements for the tools each workflow needs.
Source files and updates
The GitHub repository contains the skill instructions and supporting files. GitHub Releases provides versioned downloads, alternative .skill files, and checksums for download verification.
GitHub’s Source code download contains the whole repository. Use the individual skill ZIPs for the upload steps on this page.
When you update a skill, replace or disable the older copy so your assistant uses the version you intend.
